Project Leadership: Innovation Lab
I implemented an Innovation Lab for a municipal Social Services division to provide a space equipped with tools and resources to facilitate new ideas and innovations in service provision for clients.
Given the space limitations the innovation lab was to be located in a pre-existing training room which was already equipped as a computer lab. This did present some limitations in how the innovation lab could be setup. After I researched the layout of other existing innovation labs, I decided to make this innovation lab 'mobile', with resources that could be easily tucked away and/or transported to other rooms if needed. As a result, the 'innovation lab' was less of a permanent physical space but a toolkit that could be used where needed.
I acquired a rolling cart where I would store the innovation tools and resources. I improved the computer lab (the lab's home-base) with the addition of wall decals and room décor that reflected an innovation and design thinking mindset.
After acquiring the resources and tools, I both developed and facilitated design thinking training for members of the quality assurance team. The idea of training these particular staff members was that, as our most quality and innovation-minded staff, they would act in the role of innovation facilitators that would work with departments within the division as needed, to facilitate design thinking ideation sessions.
